Overburning


Sometimes we have to save footage that cannot be reduced, or would occupy a little more space than the nominal capacity of CDs and DVDs.  In such situations it would be useful to have a drive that can write that little bit extra - it has overburning capabilities.  Is this possible for the tested drive?
Nero CD-DVD Speed and the "Burn test" option were used to verify this.  For some discs, the program did not display the final window indicating the value of possible overburning.  We do not know why, but if the program does not respond for a long time, we read the value of the progress bar and stop the program.

To verify that the recorder is capable of recording more than 700 MB on discs, Verbatim 700 MB, Esperanza 800 MB (90minut), and ThinkXtra 870 MB (99minut) are tested.

Overburning DVD

 To verify that the drive is capable of writing more than 4.38GB discs we tested TDK DVD-R.

Book-Type

 Book-Type tools do not support the tested drives.  The Vinpower /LG WH16NS58 has a (probably preset) booktype of DVD-ROM only for DVD + RW media, or there is a faulty program indication for + RW discs (which sometimes happens).

DiscQuality

The factory version of the LG BH16NS55 does not allow access to read errors and correction, and is therefore not supported by the testing programs.  
There is no way to perform quality tests on this model.
The VinPower WH16NS58 allows the following tests (according to manufacturer's specifications) for DVD:  PI8 \ PIF \ POF and LDC \ BIS when using VinPower’s PlexTools Lite.  DVD \ BD disc quality tests also work in Opti Drive Control.  CD tests can only be performed using VinPower software, but are probably incorrect since the manufacturer does not list this capability in their specifications for the drive.
BD-R XL discs can be tested using VinPower’s PlexTools Lite software.

Summary.

Overburning is possible up to 84 minutes and 34 seconds on CDs.  On 800 MB CDs it is possible to overburn up to a maximum of 92 minutes and 10 seconds.  On larger discs (870 MB) the limit is 99minutes and 34 seconds.

Unfortunately, DVD + -Rs will not overburn - that's a limit of 4.38 GB.  The WH16NS58 DVD-ROM booktype is factory-set only for DVD + RW, or it is a test program error.  We are very pleased with the drive’s ability to test disc quality, especially for BD-R XL.
